How to Succeed in Self-leadership

2 mins read

I believe that self-leadership is the foundation of leadership for others.

Leaders lead by example and serve others to become the best version of themselves. In achieving this, someone who doesn’t have self-awareness or self-mastery will find it difficult to lead or serve others.

It feels empty and not right. An empty bottle floating on the water is still empty.

Some of my clients in high organisational positions would still ask themselves the same questions.

“Who am I?”

“What is my life’s mission?”

“What do I really want?”

It is easier to answer for others than answer our own questions.

Therefore, it is only crucial to focus on personal development and growth in ourselves in order to understand who we are and become the best that we can be before we start serving others.

Take this simple theory.

To master ourselves, there are 3 areas to focus on: Body, Mind, and Soul.

The 3 Elements for Self-Mastery: Body, Mind, and Soul

To you, it may feel like a cliche often heard in the fitness and health industry. However, ancient teachings, religions, and mythology all state the importance of this triad. These three elements co-create the One.

If one of the 3 elements goes missing, we won’t exist.

Here’s an analogy – your laptop.

Your Body is the hardware, Your Mind is the software, and Your Soul is the electricity. A lack of any of these 3 elements won’t make your laptop function the way it’s intended to.

Study shows that the most successful people in the world perform rituals that cover the three – body, mind, and soul. Most of them usually do this in the morning. They have routines involving bodywork; planning, reading, and writing to develop their mind as well as spiritual rituals such as meditation, prayer, and religious acts to nourish their souls. It also regroups their wheel of life in a different way.

So what is your level of development in each area? How do you nourish your body, mind, and soul (spirit)? What is lacking in your life and how can you make progress?
